The Marshall-Moretz Dinner
History
Since 1981, First Presbyterian Church has hosted an annual Christmas Eve dinner for the lonely, poor and/or homeless of Richmond. Inspired by Rev. Bill Young's Advent sermons praising Peter Marshall's similar ministry to the homeless of Washington, D.C., our effort has been from the beginning, a ministry of the entire congregation.
The congregation provides baked goods, transportation, meal preparation, entertainment, children's gifts, ham turkeys and clean-up after the meal.
In 2001, we served more than 100 people. It has also become a family tradition for the members. Many families take time out of their busy holiday schedules to serve others during this joyful occasion.
Many of the guests have found a Christmas Eve home at the dinner every year since it began. Others have only been passing through Richmond and have come in for the warmth & fellowship of a Christmas Eve meal.
For years Ginny Moretz has orchestrated the annual Christmas Dinner. The Session, in honor of Ginny's tireless efforts, has changed the name of the dinner to the Marshall-Moretz Dinner. For the past 4 years the dinner has been under the care of Sandy Connor. Sandy has followed in Ginny's steps very well and has done an excellent job.
